The arms make the bird look more powerful, like a bird-god or something like that :D

Those arms are insect-like (despite the fingers) and the bird wing is reminding me of an insect shell. Both of which could come in handly for a spirit-seeking bird, I would imagine! But what's particularly interesting from a compositional viewpoint (to me, anyway), is that the arms, while noticeable, aren't in-your-face dominant. Somehow the circle around the bird's head and the small flourish at the wing work with the arms to develop a unity. But having said this, from an emotional standpoint, the image is unsettling to me and I can't quite figure out why.

Thank you for sharing your insightful comment. When you figure out what is unsettling about this piece, let me know. One thing that might be contributing to this feeling is the cropping off of the left hand, usually a no-no.
